Intro to Straps focuses on building the foundational strength and body awareness needed for aerial straps. This workshop is about learning how straps move, how the body interacts with them, and building clean, efficient movement patterns. The strength and technique developed here will carry over to other aerial apparatuses and set students up for more advanced straps work

Prerequisites:

Previous aerial experience is helpful but not required

The following are useful to have, but not necessary:

  • 3–5 pull-ups

  • 3–5 leg lifts

  • Ability to kick up to handstand with a partner or wall

This workshop is for ages 14+ or 12+ with prior aerial experience

About the Instructor: Ian Kent is a former Circus Smirkus performer with over a decade of acrobatic experience. He trained extensively under Sellam El Ouhabi and Jacob Skeffington, and is the main straps coach at Rhode Island Circus Space.

Videos of skills taught during the workshop are allowed and encouraged.

Workshops with Rachel Hipszer

Handstands and Hand-balancing
Have you ever wanted to be able to go upside-down whenever or wherever? Scared to make that first step into the dreaded “handstand”? Never fear, there’s a handstand for everyone. This workshop is for all skill levels and will focus primarily on the act of hand-balancing. No matter your skill level, this workshop will get you inverted and having a good time. See what everyone is raving about and see the world from a different view!

Active Flexibility

Gravity got you down? Ever wonder why you are more flexible on the ground then in the air? Wonder why ballerinas can hold their foot up in the air with ease? Come get flexible with us and learn the importance of active and passive flexibility. All levels are welcome.

Climbs for Aerialists
Tired of that same old climb? Looking to spice up a routine or learn a new way to make it up those silks? Well this workshop has got you covered. Not only will you learn to make your old climbs more elegant, but you will learn new ways of making it from the floor to the ceiling. This workshop is for all levels, but it is advised to at least have some prior experience in either rope or silks. If you can safely climb to the top of a rope using any method (whether at your gym, gymnastics center, aerial studio, ect.) then you will excel at this workshop.

PARTNER SILKS & ACROBALANCE WORKSHOP

Double your fun on the silks with an aerial partner! Join Jane for this fun, yet challenging, introduction to the foundational skills for duo silks. We will focus on basic hand to hand combinations, mounting and stacked positions that require strength and determination to achieve.
We will be adding a segment of acrobalance in this workshop. Acrobalance is an acrobatic art that combines elements of partner work and hand balancing. Acrobalance is a great new skill to learn, which helps improve strength and balance. We will focus on learning basic balancing followed by partner balancing, to create beautiful moves with each other.
Pre-requisites: Aerial Silks experience needed. Students must be able to climb and descend with control. YOU MUST HAVE THE ABILITY TO INVERT IN THE AIR, AND KNOW HOW TO DO A STRADDLE BACK. Have an open mind about basing AND flying, and the mindset to always take care of the person who's in the air with you.
By the end of the workshop you will be having fun together flying through the air! Making human pyramids, balancing in the air and basing moves you didn’t think possible.
